Opioids are difficult to control and eventually become addictive and hard to manage. People's brains are wired to want this drug. When opioids enter the brain, they bind to receptors known as mu opioid receptors on brain cells or neurons

 

These receptors called the "reward center", stimulates the brain. The parts of the brain that are most used are the frontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens. These are the pathways for pleasure and reward.

Homeostasis & Physiology

Drugs tap into the communication center of the brain and getting in the way of neurons receiving, sending and processing information.

 

Drugs flood the reward center with Dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in parts of the brain that control movement, emotion, and feelings of pleasure. 

 

Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, which is a chemical that decreases brain function. Depressant drugs increase the occurrence of gamma-aminobutyric causing those effects.
